The Amo Collective Berlin* is thrilled to invite you to our Counter-mapping Days Berlin, which will take place from July 12th to 14th. As this year marks the 140th anniversary of the Berlin Conference, whose echoes of domination and division continue to reverberate through our bodies, institutions, and relations, we need to mark this heinous anniversary.
The Counter-mapping Days Berlin on 12-14 July will be a joyful, playful response to the Berlin Conference and an opportunity for us to pause, reflect, and reimagine a collective future. For three days, we will use mapping and wayfinding to bring communities together – as a thread that weaves us back to ourselves, to each other, and to this world. We use maps not to erase and divide but to reveal and connect.
We carefully plan and hold this space to bring together communities and activists, researchers, artists, students and interested members of the public re-orient the past, and re-connect in our present, while imagining and co-creating our future.
Inspired by Afro-German Enlightenment philosopher Anton Wilhelm Amo´s groundbreaking work on sensation and cognition, we will explore sensory experiences as wayfinding tools to connect as we chart a path to freedom.
Join us for the Counter-mapping Days from 12-14 July at the Amo Salon and Garden at Humboldt University ‘s Institute for European Ethnology for an immersive experience that combines outdoor workshops and activities around the Kiosk Batakari pop-up pavilion with indoor quiet spaces for contemplation and connection. We will celebrate the joyful legacies of Afro-diasporic, queer, mestizo, and anti-ableist expressions and perspectives. Together, we will learn to navigate multiple forms of knowledge toward personal transformation and solidarity.

We are also delighted to invite you to our Public Assembly on Monday, July 1st, from 6.00 to 8.00 p.m! On this occasion, we will be sharing our ongoing work on the project “Counter-mapping Berlin: Experimentelle Stadtentwürfe nach der Berliner Konferenz”, and you will get a peak preview into the contents and meet some or our wonderful workshop facilitators of the upcoming Counter-mapping Days event.
In this Public Assembly, we invite you to take a look at the process and methods of our work, as we want to hear from you in a space of warm gathering and lively exchange. We appreciate your interest in participating! We are very excited and look forward to meeting you on July 1st!

*The Amo Collective Berlin is a collective of researchers, artists, activists, students and curators based in the Amo Salon, c/o Institute for European Ethnology, Humboldt University of Berlin. The collective emerged out of the anti-racist and decolonial struggles to rename M*Straße after the Afro-German Enlightenment philosopher and anti-racist pioneer of the early 18th century – Anton-Wilhelm Amo.

Das Amo Collective Berlin* freut sich, euch zu unseren Counter Mapping Days Berlin vom 12. Bis zum 14. Juli einzuladen. Da sich dieses Jahr die Berliner Konferenz zum 140. Mal jährt, dessen Nachklang von Unterdrückung und Teilung noch immer in unseren Körpern, Institutionen und Beziehungen wirkt, greifen wir diesen Anlass auf.
Die Counter-mapping Days Berlin werden eine fröhliche, spielerische Antwort auf die Berliner Konferenz bieten und uns Gelegenheit geben, innezuhalten, nachzudenken und eine gemeinsame Zukunft zu reimaginieren. Drei Tage lang werden wir Mapping und Wayfinding nutzen, um Gemeinschaften zusammenzubringen – als ein Faden, der uns zu uns selbst, zueinander und zu dieser Welt zurückführt. Wir verwenden Karten nicht, um auszulöschen und zu trennen, sondern um offenzulegen und zu verbinden.
Behutsam planen und bieten wir diesen Raum, um Gemeinschaften und Aktivist*innen, Forschende, Künstler*innen, Studierende und interessierte Bürger*innen zusammenzubringen, um die Vergangenheit neu auszurichten und in der Gegenwart neue Verbindungen zu knüpfen, während wir unsere Zukunft imaginieren und co-kreieren.
Inspiriert von der bahnbrechenden Arbeit des afro-deutschen Aufklärungs-Philosophen Anton Wilhelm Amo zu Empfindung und Erkenntnis, werden wir sensorische Erfahrungen als Wayfinding-tools erforschen, um uns auf dem Weg in die Freiheit zu verbinden.
Kommt vom 12. bis zum 14. Juli in den Amo-Salon und -Garten am Institut für Europäische Ethnologie der Humboldt-Universität. Wir verbinden Workshops und Aktivitäten im Freien rund um den Kiosk Batakari Pop-Up Pavillon mit ruhigen Innenräumen (low sensory space) für Kontemplation und Verbindung. Wir werden das vielseitige Erbe der afro-diasporischen, queeren, mestizischen und anti-ableistischen Ausdrucksformen und Perspektiven feiern. Gemeinsam möchten wir durch die verschiedenen Formen des Wissens lernen und uns weiterentwickeln, um persönliche Transformation und Solidarität zu erreichen.

*Das Amo Collective Berlin ist eine Gruppe von Studierenden, Künstler*innen, Wissenschaftler*innen und der Zivilgesellschaft am Institut für Europäische Ethnologie der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Das Kollektiv entstand aus den antirassistischen und dekolonialen Kämpfen um die Umbenennung der M-Straße in Berlin Mitte nach dem afrodeutschen Aufklärungsphilosophen und antirassistischen Vordenker des frühen 18.
